Participants will remove litter and debris from retail corridors, residential drainage channels, and streets.  Volunteers need to register in advance to get a cleanup location assignment.  Participants of all ages are welcome, but the youth are required to have adult supervision. The boulevard on the north side of town is getting a facelift from I-35W to Douglas Street (near Taylor Elementary School). Barricades are in place the length of the construction route. The barricades are intended to keep drivers from inadvertently driving into oncoming traffic. The traffic control plan includes a dedicated entrance into the Burleson Town Center retail site.

The median on Alsbury will be reconstructed. The median adjacent to the service road (Burleson Boulevard) will be narrowed to make room for a dedicated right-turn lane for eastbound traffic.

The timing on the construction is 210 calendar days (seven months), but it could be finished before Christmas. The paving next to the retail center could be complete by Nov. 1. No intersections will be fully closed during this project. The intersections will be paved one-half at a time.

Mommy and Mee Tea Party

The Burleson City’s parks and recreation department is hosting the second annual Mommy and Me Tea Party and Fashion Show on Friday, Aug. 7, at the
Burleson Community Center. Daughters will play dress up, paint their
nails, take a walk on the runway and enjoy cookies and punch.

This party is geared toward children 3 years old and up. The 90-minute
party starts at 10 a.m. The cost is $22.  You must register a week in

Fifty to 80 percent of the typical household’s summertime water bill goes to watering the lawn or yard. Chafin said cutting down on outdoor water use—and other landscape costs, such as fertilizers and pesticides—just makes sense.

“A yard that is ‘smart’ for Texas doesn’t have to mean rocks and cactus,” Chafin said.  “Using beautiful native and adapted plants, plus a few simple maintenance practices, can save homeowners significant money while still giving them the lush looking landscape they want.  And it’s better for the environment.”

Four Simple Steps to Put Your Yard on a Budget

• Water early or late (it is against City code to use a sprinkler system to water your lawn between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., year round). Fifty percent of your irrigation can be lost to evaporation, especially if you use misting sprinklers.
• Water less frequently.  Most lawns only need watering once every five-seven days in the growing season and every 15-20 days in the winter.  If it rains, you may be able to water even less.
• Install drip irrigation in flower beds and at the roots of shrubs. Drip irrigation delivers almost 95 percent of the water to plants.  Installing drip irrigation doesn’t have to be costly—soaker hoses can be purchased for under $15 at your local hardware store.
• Use mulch. Place a 3-inch layer of organic mulch around plants and on top of the soil in flower beds.  This will hold in water to keep the soil moist longer.
