Each year, the City of Burleson and Keep Burleson Beautiful (KBB) challenge students from first through eighth grade to participate in the Burleson Environmental Education (B.E.E.) awards. Students create bumper stickers, posters, essays, and commercials touting an environmental message, including litter and pollution prevention, recycling, conservation, and beautification.

This year 63 classrooms submitted entries. Teachers were asked to pick the top three entries from their classroom for judging. Of the 180-plus entries submitted to KBB, 38 were chosen as the winners. Included in the winners’ list was Sherry McGee’s third grade classroom from the Academy at Nola Dunn who created a video on gardening. Winners were recognized at a special ceremony at Burleson City Hall on Thursday, May 21.

Eleven schools including Taylor Elementary, Norwood Elementary, Bransom Elementary, Brock Elementary, Hajek Elementary, Frazier Elementary, Mound Elementary, the Academy at Nola Dunn, Kerr Middle School, Holy Cross Christian Academy, and Boulevard Baptist Christian School entered the contest. With 13 classrooms, the Academy at Nola Dunn was the school with the
most participation. The Academy at Nola Dunn will receive a tree to plant on campus and a plaque to display in the school building.  Congratulations go to Principal Tani Simons.

The 2009 Burleson Environmental Education (B.E.E.) awards were sponsored by Keep Burleson Beautiful, the City of Burleson, and Chesapeake Energy. Thanks to Chesapeake’s sponsorship, each teacher whose students participated in the B.E.E. awards received a special goodie bag.
